LITTLE BIRDIE
Rooted in folk, shaped by country and bluegrass and moved by rock and blues, Orit Shimoni writes songs that are lyrical and poignant. Performed with sideman Andre Kirchhoff and various other backing musicians, the sound of Little Birdie transcends the idiom, and truly has a voice of its own.
KATIE MOORE
This devout alt-country darling’s astonishing voice and songs are seeped in the traditions of old-time acoustic music. She plays with Plants and Animals’ Warren Spicer along with Montreal’s finest country outlaws. Her debut cd is a simple, slow-country homage and includes the classic tear jerkers as well as some thoughtful originals. She is currently working on a new album. Katie also plays in Timber and in Yonder Hill, a bluegrass band.
LEE MELLOR & THE MUDHOUNDS
Renowned for his storytelling lyrics and the growl that delivers them, fiery bearded songwriter Lee Mellor draws from bluegrass, folk, country and rock influences to fashion a sound which he calls “Citygrass.” He is currently backed by the Mudhounds, an eclectic five-piece employing fiddle, banjo, mandolin, upright bass and drums to drive his unique perspective of the human struggle into his audience’s hearts.
THE UNITED STEEL WORKERS OF MONTREAL
Since laying their claim to a plot of land just east of Alt-Country four short years ago, The United Steel Workers of Montreal have forged themselves a unique sound that’s been described as “rousing, old-style cowboy punk with an urban edge.” Undeniable musical virtuosity as well as the band’s forceful stage presence and always endearing banter have helped propel the USWM to be one of Montreal’s top indie acts. In 2005, while building up their substantial following, The United Steel Workers of Montreal celebrated the release of their debut album Broken Trucks and Bottles and have since begun planning the party that’ll celebrate the release of their follow up album in 2006.
LI'L ANDY & KARAOKE COWBOY
Since leaving his hometown of Wakefield, Quebec nearly 5 years ago, songwriter Andrew McClelland has established himself at the forefront of Montreal’s burgeoning roots music scene. A lyricist capable of manoeuvring from scathingly funny to gently sorrowful in a single line, Andy’s songs occupy a unique space in between the singer-songwriter genre and the tradition of country music. With his band Karaoke Cowboy, Li’l Andy’s live performances have led critics to proclaim them “the Tigris and Euphrates of the Montreal country scene: they are essential to the city’s fertile roots-music culture” (Hour Magazine.)
